The traffic cone won...

Just a quick update about the Washington D.C. race for those of you wondering about my DNF.

After a terrible swim, probably the worst of my career, as everyone seemed to get to the first buoy at the exact same time, I found myself in one of many chase packs. On the 2nd lap of the bike through downtown D.C., I was at the back of the group and ended up running into a very large traffic cone as the other members of my pack dodged it right and left. The cone won the encounter and I ended up face down on the pavement.

After blacking out, I woke up in an ambulance on my way to GW Hospital very confused and with a bit of memory loss. A number of CT scans determined that I had not fractured anything and there was no bleeding in my brain but I had suffered a grade 3 concussion. My memory all came back very quickly, however, the severity of the concussion means that I have had to withdraw from the Hyvee race this coming weekend. It is disappointing on a number of fronts, but I know that these things happen and am just thankful that I didn't break anything in the crash.

I will spend the rest of the week in Boulder recuperating before traveling back to Davos, Switzerland to resume my hard training in the lead up to the next block of races starting with a race for my German Team (Asics Team Witten) and then the Hamburg World Championship Series race.
